TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are investing one billion euros in hydrogen in the Netherlands.
This partnership is part of a broader objective to decarbonize the European oil and petrochemical industry, with a particular focus on TotalEnergies’ refineries.
The flagship project of this initiative is taking place in the port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. It involves the construction of a 200 MW electrolyzer, named ELYgator, which will be capable of producing 23,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually by 2027. The hydrogen will be generated using electricity from offshore wind farms, thereby contributing to reducing the carbon footprint of TotalEnergies’ sites. This project is expected to cut CO2 emissions from two refineries by up to 450,000 tons per year.
Both companies will benefit from European subsidies, including the EU Innovation Fund and the IPCEI program, which aim to promote hydrogen and mobility projects in Europe. Once the project is operational, Air Liquide will become the exclusive operator of this infrastructure.
