France Hydrogène, along with several European federations, French and German national associations, as well as companies within the synthetic fuels value chain, is calling on the European Commission to amend the provisions regarding the utilization of unavoidable industrial CO2 in the production of renewable non-biological fuels (RFNBOs DA), in accordance with the current review clauses.

The valorization of unavoidable industrial CO2 post-2040 must contribute to addressing two key challenges: meeting climate targets through the decarbonization of industries and air and maritime transport, while also swiftly initiating projects to establish a sovereign European value chain for synthetic molecules.

The letter presents a phased approach to defining and authorizing the valorization of unavoidable industrial CO2 post-2040, aiming to reconcile these challenges and cater to the increasing demand for CO2 without relying on imports. Among the different conditions to qualify unavoidable industrial CO2 that will be discussed, France Hydrogène also advocates for setting a date for the commissioning of carbon capture and usage assets in order to expedite the initiation of synthetic fuel projects.
